The photos that will be accompanying the Faces of Farscape will be for the most part ones I have from my experiences. Below is from the first Official Farscape Convention — 2000 Burbank, CA. It is also my wish list (plus Tammy McIntosh) for 2019 π
Today’s Face of Farscape is SylvreWolfe. A staple at cons, an originator of the Scaper Lobby Party and active in the Save Farscape campaign back in the day. Here is how she became a Scaper :
My now ex-husband was the scifi fan and got me watching Farscape. Maybe it was because social media was a relatively new concept, but that was also when I first started visiting fan websites. It was on one of those sites that I learned of a Farscape convention. So, I got tickets not knowing anything about conventions or the people that went. The thing I enjoyed the most was that Scapers are very accepting of weird people, they can be rather loud, but they accept everyone. And they are accepting of newbies to the fandom even now.

#FarscapeFriday
One of the things that drew me to Farscape were the imperfections of the characters. I had grown up with scifi shows led by Earthlings who instantly understood how to deal with aliens and alien cultures, who were never nonplussed at any situation in the galaxy. Enter John Crichton who has trouble with a door handle. Enter aliens without Silicon Valley looking computers. Season 1 progresses and we have the classic Earth guy/alien chick scenario building. Then bam they actually MENTION attraction to each other! I wasn’t going to be suckered. Season 2 again relationship not a plot device but just there like all the other interactions of the characters. I then attended San Diego Comic Con 2001. Rockne O’Bannon fielded a question about John and Aeryn. It triggered one of the best rants I have ever heard by a producer/writer. He railed against the convention that was adult relationships are boring. He stated they are part of life and shouldn’t be only considered plot worthy when they were being used as a device like jealousy or deception (there was more but my memory a bit faulty as most of us were in shock!). He then used Chris Carter the producer of the X Files as an example of being unwilling to use the gift of amazing screen chemistry because it “wasn’t what people wanted” and wasn’t “important” to the story to have the characters being more than partners. Rockne said the personal moments make characters real — not necessarily sexual moments but simple ones like John and D’Argo. I know many fans have no interest in John and Aeryn’s journey, but when they speak of their favorite character or moments of said character it is usually one of these glimpses. A good show has stories made of big and small moments, not just chatter getting you from one action sequence to the next. Just my opinion and one Farscape exemplifies . Then at the 2001 Farscape Convention the official photos included the one above. Many of us waiting stared through the window at the merchandise drooling, our cynical minds blown!

Sooo I have to wonder at a couple of things the Henson Company has been doing. A couple of months ago the youtube channel appeared that is linked to the Official Farscape Facebook page. Then there is the Creature Shop contest being held at Dragon Con in Atlanta later this month. The judges are Brian Henson, Kirk Thatcher and Halle Stanford. Stanford is a producer that also happens to the head of Henson’s television division. Thatcher is a long time producer with Henson and also was involved in the original Star Wars films. If you are attending Dragon Con be sure and support this event and look for these people and tell them you want Ben Browder’s Crichton back!! If you don’t, just thank them for Farscape π

This week’s Faces of Farscape is a young woman from Fiji I noticed on the @farscapenow Twitter feed. She is just celebrating her 21st birthday. With talk of the 20th Anniversary I thought Wow! She was a toddler when the show debuted! So I was thinking this is the future of the fandom, new viewers finding the show and becoming active on social media. I realize many have introduced their kids and grandchildren to the show but those that have stumbled on it on their own intrigue me! She is currently at university in New Zealand. So here is her story :
I initially found Farscape through Stargate SG1 which, at the time, I had only watched from Season 9 onwards because I was obsessed with Claudia and Ben (or their characters at least). In New Zealand, our local DVD/Video hire places stocked heaps of Kiwi and Australian shows/movies, Farscape being one of them. 11yr old me wanted to watch everything with Claudia or Ben in it! I found the DVD Boxsets of Farscape, hired them out and then binge watched the entire series during the holidays! Admittedly, I was far too young to be watching it haha. However my love for Farscape and the Sci-Fi genre grew immensely. Farscape introduced me to wonder and imagination and for that I am incredibly grateful. Twitter: or on Instagram: .grace

I can not help but compare Ben fans with other actors’ fans. Petty I know but I don’t apologize! π While we all appreciate his ability to draw us into what ever character he is playing and have an emotional response, we also appreciate the superficial which he honestly admits is nothing to do with him but rather his genes. Yet in general we respect him and his family and keep the more risque comments private. Actors accept that stuff is said on social media about them — professional and personal— and not all of it nice. That said I think “fan police” hurt a fandom. I asked Ben about it when we first started the farscapenow campaign — asking if he minded that we were pimping him out! He said often that is necessary to prove a show is worthy. He didn’t find it insulting to be labelled as “hot” which in Hollywood can translate into work. I think all of us wish all our jobs and all entertainment casting was based purely on ability but at this time that is not the case.
So I want to encourage those of you active on social media to share a favorite photo of Ben — as himself or in a role that gives you “feels”. The photo above is from FedCon 2013. The segment before Ben and Claudia Black ran over considerably and Claudia needed to use the ladies so Garrett Wang the host was talking and Ben surprised him from the audience! The crowd (many of who were not Farscape fans until after the con!) were charmed!
