The Faces of Farscape will continue on Tuesdays so stay tuned!

I feel like I nag about contacting cons for an anniversary event next year. Then someone will say we need to do something! Same with we need more Farscape let’s do something. A small, steadily growing group has been trying to draw attention to both of these. Unique users in growing numbers are what matter. People anymore often don’t want to do more than click “Like” or fill out a petition that likely auto populates! Before Creation commits serious money for an anniversary con they need to know people are actually motivated and want to buy tickets! Contact them! Meanwhile I will post some of my favorite moments from cons over the last 19 years!! Above first meeting in person with Ben 2001. To this day I do not remember what he said!

As we build up to the 20th anniversary of Farscape the show that introduced many of us to Ben and a group of fantastic Australian actors, I am going to feature some faces of Farscape that I have been lucky of to know in various realities, flesh and virtual to name 2! There is a technicolor universe of all age fans who hang out, laugh and discuss many things besides Farscape when they come together. Often adult beverages and unhealthy snacks are present as well 🙂

Today I give you UCSBDad ( the two of us among a small group that attended every west coast Farscape Con) in his own words how he found Farscape :

I saw the previews of Farscape on the Sci Fi channel and was very impressed with the aliens. They were so much better than the usual humans with odd noses or whatever you usually saw. I was also interested in a certain raven haired young lady. I had never attended a con before, but I was given a ticket by Olympia Fishhead, if anyone remembers her. I went and had a great time and went to all the following LA area cons. I still miss Farscape.

UCSBDad is one of the oldest Scapers we have and possess a dry wit that seems to be a staple personality trait of many of us! He was the author of some of the first Farscape fanfiction I read and I was so excited to meet him in person at a con. I last met up with him in 2014 at Phoenix Fan Days con at which Ben was a guest and hope there is a Farscape Con next year where we can meet up again!

#ManCrushMonday #smitten

While we await for new Ben, look for Nevada. One of my favorite of his early films. Ben has a small but meaty role in the female film ( from before that was trendy).

While we have no news on any of Ben’s projects I want to say what I WISH for him.  Two current roles on TV Holden of The Expanse (the books start with a 30 year old and span decades so this no more unrealistic than casting a young guy and not aging him) and the other is Doc Holliday in Wynnona Earp.  There are others as well that I think he would have brought life to but these two I think of when I watch he would have enriched the story. On the big screen I think the Dan Brown books would have been better served by choosing Ben  for the Mark Langston role, besides being “the look” of the character I think he can play the smart jock professor who is often unaware of his affect on women 😀 Of course most of us agree he should have been Star Lord, but I will settle for a smidge more of the Sovereign Admiral. Of course I also see Ben as Reacher still with each of books and have never watched the film. It can be petty to be so locked into how a book character looks but to me Reacher is more cerebral than I think Cruise can convey believably ( and how the trailer looked didn’t change my mind).  I will continue to campaign for more Farscape for a couple of reasons — good drama and a staff that appreciates characters not plot points. Ben is Crichton and could give life once again to him to entertain us. Entertain doesn’t just mean make us laugh but cry, get angry, get frustrated and think. In this era of revivals and reboots we need a better distraction from the world than mindless old sitcoms. #farscapenow

The last 19 years have shown me more of the benefits of fandom than the negative. I have made good friends who were there for me during real life lows and highs. When I hear  Farscape  it conjures  images of faces, laughter and shared moments  as well as the vibrant colors and flashes of favorite scenes. This was not my first fandom yet it was different. I have good friends from all fandoms I have invested anytime in. Included in this slideshow is Tammy McIntosh who was such a wonderful guest and surprised us by doing a cartwheel across the stage to break the ice. We were all sitting slack jawed having never seen her without the Jool makeup/prosthetic so that did the trick!  However she has declined con requests since reading comments online. I hope time has mellowed her and maybe she can be persuaded to attend OzScape next March. The large group photo (look for Ben!) was when there was an issue with photo ops at the Polaris Con 2011 in Toronto so we had redos and Ben said let’s just take a group shot! (we got this in addition to our other photo). Creation had a Green eyed Monster panel that feature Ben, Claudia Black, Lani Tapu and Tony Tilse — it was like a live commentary! There were writer panels as well including a few with Ricky Manning.  Cons are something different to each fan. I love panels listening to the creative people who have made something that has sucked me in come to life. Others are all about autographs and photo ops. Whatever motivates you as a fan try one! Many fans have been able to overcome anxiety and socializing issues for a brief time by sharing in person the joy a story has brought them.

I realize attending a con in Sydney is beyond most fans — I did not attend the previous events as my kids or finances prevented me (being an adult often sucks!). However there are many cons around that might have the budget to have a  Farscape reunion event as part of their schedule. So contact the cons that are doable for you or you have attended like Dallas, Phoenix, Creation, London, FedCon or Dragon Con. Not only are these a great opportunity for new and old fans to meet, but often they generate genre press coverage on social and conventional media sites. They are opportunities for investors to see if a project has an audience.

Added the May 2017 interview I did with Ben after the Guardians release to the “My Interviews” page. I have been lucky enough to interview him 3 times and hopefully will again next year for the 20th anniversary. So check these out if you haven’t!

We often hear actors say that on set it is a lot of hurry up and wait. The same goes for post production. Ben has two films “in the can” and awaiting distribution announcements Hoax and Being. Both currently slated for 2018 release but it is anyone’s guess at this point. I continue to be hopeful about getting to see Ben in GotGvol3 in 2020 despite the controversial firing of director and Ben fan James Gunn.  Elizabeth Debecki is listed as cast and rumors persist of more Sovereign action so……….

San Diego Comic Con draws to a close today so it is time to start asking them for a Farscape 20th Anniversary panel next year. Though most fans won’t have the opportunity to attend the point will be that it has become a high profile industry event that gets a lot of media coverage. Media coverage attracts studios and investors. Like politics there are private events with hand shakes and photo ops that may lead to opportunities.

There are many great cons these days and two that do a great job with cast “reunions” are Dallas Comic Con and Phoenix Comic Con. Both of these are great from the “regular” fan perspective as far as tickets and lodging options. So in addition to Creation, the sponsors of the Official Farscape Cons back in the day, I think we need to let these groups know what we want to see next year!

So below are the email addresses and Twitter handles to make your suggestions known!

SDCC    @Comic-Con

Phoenix Comic Con

@FANEXPODallas

Also on Facebook OzScape is organizing an event in Sydney in March — they are already working on the guest talks !!

Other cons that Ben and other Farscape actors have done and enjoyed are @FedCon and @DragonCon

49 years ago was a monumental day for the humans of Earth. We left our planet and two of us stepped on the soil of our moon. One of the things I loved about the pilot of Farscape is that it was about the positive and the excitement of space. It was set in real time, no meteor about to strike Earth, no apocalypse looming just the culmination of team work, courage and people dedicated to improving the knowledge of mankind. All the other mundane aspects and angles we know that exist were not perverted in this story to give us a cut out villain.

I asked Ben if he had any thoughts to share and here is what he replied :

“The Lunar Landing is one of the pivotal events in my lifetime… it set me down the road dreaming of great adventures.

In the last fifty years, one hundred years, one thousand years… Name another “event” that captured the attention of the entire world in such a clear and positive manner? How many scientists, explorers, and dreamers were born the day Neil Armstrong (exemplar for the USAFA class of 2019) made his small step? How many people could finally look back from another world and see the blue jewel that is our home in such a stunning fashion? It is a profoundly positive event in the history of our species.”

Farscape visits the Moon in season 4, we know the real Jack (played by Kent McCord) walked on the Moon when John was a boy.
