Ben Browder 2019 Interview
20th Anniversary of Farscape
So for the 10th and 15th anniversaries I asked if your love for and pride in Farscape has remained. So looking back has the feeling mellowed or changed?
Ben : “And some things that should not have been forgotten were lost. History becomes legend. Legend became myth.” Pretty sure my love and pride are at the Myth stage.
What type of Farscape would you like to see in 2019 — characters, platform , setting?
Ben : Streaming, 10 episode serialized seasons, ALL the original characters, plus Crichton and Aeryn’s FIVE kids. Still set in the Uncharted Territories, but starting in the trailer park section way out yonder… Like Tatooine. Then give us a new big baddie.
What are you reading these days?
Ben : The Coddling of the American Mind
The Square and The Tower
The Mighty Eighth
The Power
Lamb
Rereading Revelation Space and Time in Einstein’s Universe
From @zaxman51 on Twitter : If Farscape would have been made now, what additional would you have brought to John’s repertoire? i.e. references about social media, pop culture and history that has happened in the last 20 years?
Ben : 1) You can call me Star Lord
2) Rygel… You have TINY HANDS
3) #Tentacles
4) PICKLE RICK
5) This is Starbuck… the girl Starbuck, not the guy Starbuck …. not that a binary exists … except for the stars.
6) My name is Matt Damon, just looking … for a way home.
7) SCORPIUS did that Black Mirror thing on me.
8) Take Tyrian and his sled … back to the ship.
9) If this was Westworld they’d all be naked.
10) Harvey, knock off the Inception … you ain’t getting what’s in my head.
From getagriponmyboyracerollbar on tumblr : What is your favorite moment working with Claudia Black as Aeryn?
Ben : Driving around the sand dunes in a dune buggy still rates really high on my list. But it is a LOOONG list of favorites.
From @maridozzi on Twitter : What scene in Farscape do you remember taking the biggest emotional toll on you as an actor? Would you have changed the scene in anyway and if so how?
Ben : The coin toss scene, end of Season 3 … in my mind it’s perfect.
From @Pick_David on Twitter : Would John Crichton embrace or avoid the smartphone on Earth in the present?
Ben : Crichton would have one … perfect pocket reference … but he’d forever be replacing broken screens … and would eventually have to ditch it because enemies would be using it to track him. But he’d grab some bitchin’ selfies and snap chats and upload them to Pilot before ditching the damn thing.
From @TimonPoint on Twitter : How many of John’s kids are out there?
Ben : Two that we know of for sure … probably another lurking somewhere … and if the story is done right … John and Aeryn have had another four since.
Side note ( for Tim) Thank you to your parents for raising you to serve others. Thank you to all your family for their sacrifice, support, and worry while you and your team were part of the 0.05% that defend our constitution and freedoms.
Any interesting projects you can talk about?
Ben : I wish.
How would Farscape be received in 2019?
Ben : I think Farscape would rightly find its place in today’s busy mediaverse … Is there anything else like it on the market? And who wouldn’t follow Rygel on Twitter? #Dominar

Last but not least don’t forget to save the evening of March 19th to help celebrate Farscape’s 20th Anniversary Tweetfest! Last year we had over 400 people tweet comments, memories, and photos. Likely time will be at 8 pm ET, 2000 GMT, and 2000 GMT+11 (NSW, Australia).

The countdown to the #Farscape20thAnniversaryTwitterParty has begun! This is a great fandom though these days it is spread far and wide and a bit unconnected. I know Scapers are out there! We need to show a unified voice to show our love for one night. So suck it up and create a Twitter handle/account for March 19th. I will have some links to memes, click the GIF icon on the Tweet box and put in Farscape and get some basic choices, or do a running rewatch. Times worldwide will be announced —- US (North and South America), UK/EU, and South Pacific. Hashtags will be #Farscape20thAnniversary, #Farscape, and #farscapenow. You can also tag your favorite cast members, Henson Company etc. The phone app allows you to schedule tweets in advance if you aren’t going to be able to make it. I will be posting lots of reminders in the coming days. Instagrammers feel free to organize there as well! Most other social media doesn’t garner the attention we are looking for which is basically a reminder we are still here! There are a few thousand fans registers at Reddit and on Facebook groups, so if we can get people out for one night onto a single platform to thank Henson, the cast and crew ….

Ben’s last convention appearance π Still no word on any Farscape 20th Anniversary panels at this point. This is partly do to the con industry in general and perhaps a belief there is little market.
Ben has two projects, Hoax and Being, completed and still awaiting distribution dates or deals. No other screen news to report π
One month from today will be the 20th Anniversary of Farscape and Ben entering our living rooms. Last year we had a good response on Twitter and I am hoping we can do better this year! For those who don’t tweet please consider joining us this year!! Get an account and just search Farscape or Ben to see what it is like π Those who do have accounts start organizing your favorite photos and GIFs !! The plan is a 24 hour event starting in Australia and continuing to the US. We will have start times posted for Australia, Europe and North America. Twitter on most smart phones allows you to schedule your tweets ahead of time. More details to come!

I am loving all the love for Ben and Farscape that Arkane Martine’s article,The Ethical Drama of Farscape’s John Crichton , has sparked on social media! Great discussion on Reddit as well as many comments on Twitter. I asked Ben if he had had a chance to read it and if he had any comments to share and here is his response :
“I did read the Tor article and enjoyed it very much. I surely appreciate the writer notes how Farscape strays from the traditional heroes journey, yet finds a way to redemption. Farscape and Crichton are anti-fragileβ¦ they grew and adapted and sought better paths.”
I think one thing I enjoyed most about Crichton and how Ben portrayed him was that all consequences, good and bad, were felt by him and we in turn shared them. It wasn’t always comfortable or resolved but we weren’t left wondering and relying on fanfic to explore what he was feeling. I am not saying he was an open book , but rather we journeyed with the character of John and got to know him like a good friend. Often shows need to make a point so ignore something felt/revealed to make the story “work”. Farscape‘s writers and Ben didn’t seem to mind the rocky path.

I know it has been awhile but I admit to being a bit down over the OzScape being cancelled and no other con announcements. There are all kinds of fans. I never expected I would turn out to be one who loved cons. Though it really makes sense as I always loved listening and reading interviews with creative people no matter what their medium of choice. Panels especially can be an amazing experience because we all remember different things about an event. Ben and the other Farscape actors take the questions seriously (or not!) making it an interesting experience. Ben can talk! Sometimes he even answers the question π I love to know if an acting choice was deliberate or just happened. I love hearing how actors “see” the characters they play. Other fans are more about the encounters with the actors like autographs or photos where they can talk a few moments with those they admire. I realize many cons very pricey and I am lucky being single with grown children that my vacations are my own and I have many fandom friends who share the love of travel to cons as well as the room cost! I love Facebook for the most part but the groups turn fans into couch potatoes. People can’t be bothered if something takes more than selecting “Like”. The show likely would not have gotten a mini series if it was cancelled today. People are lamenting no anniversary con. People lamenting no Farscape streaming. Longtime Scaper Sylverwolfe organized a petition to let Creation Entertainment (they put on 12 or so Farscape cons) know we were interested. Only 188 people bothered. I get it may have seemed futile or people knew they would not be going BUT it was a 10 second action to show support of a show and actors people claim to love. Ever since Ben called for fans to get active calling for more Farscape in Birmingham 2017 a small slowly growing group has been active on Twitter, a platform the industry monitors for real time feedback and trends. It is simple and if you like the ease of Facebook you can just search Farscape , then Like and retweet. You can click on GIFs and enter Farscape and share. Many of these feature Ben so easy peasy! You can makeup a fake name and get an email to create the account if you are worried about privacy or crazy people or your co-workers finding out! But if you want to see more of Ben in Farscape which he wants as it is a project that remain close to his heart, take a few minutes each day to Tweet Henson Company. Or if you want a chance to experience what you have seen on con videos of Ben talking, take a few minutes and Tweet the various cons and let them know. Or if you just want producers to know Ben has a fan base to bring to their projects, take a few minutes to Tweet your favorite roles/comments/interviews/photos. There are thousands of fans even after allowing for duplication on Farscape and Ben Browder pages on Facebook yet small presence on Twitter though it is growing! Join in. Start small and follow @BenBrowder_Net , @Frell_U, @plvanover88 and @vinegardog1 always have something fun to watch/drool over! I am @Action_John.

So not much Ben news at the moment π But good news for those that don’t want to rip digital versions of Farscape for their devices! iTunes also now has all four seasons available! $19.99 each — does not seem to be available internationally though I am sure some of you have ways around that.
More and more people mention/discussing Farscape on Twitter so join in! Just search Farscape ! Several cast members have accounts and writer Ricky Manning — @froonium — often shares wonderful gems (and wit!) . Ben does not have an official Twitter at this time.
Next Sunday our rewatch group will be watching Bad Timing at 1530 ET. We are inviting anyone who is interested! It is a loose chat of Scapers who have seen the show more times than we can count! Spoilers will abound π We use a Mibbit room — so go to the site pick a username and the channel is #clubfarscape.

Not much news still waiting for release info on Ben’s last two films, Being and Hoax. Super Farscape fan Kielen King’s single Crichton will be released January first, the rest of the 20th Anniversary tribute album will be out March 19,2019. Check out the details and a sneak preview here. I am more a classic/alternative rock fan but the subject of this song won me over π
Remember to request Ben and you other Farscape favorites for your favorite big cons so we can have an anniversary panel!
